Some of the puppies are now big enough and old enough for
spay/neuter, which is happening today! Interested in adopting? A
few will go tomorrow to our "Second Chance for Love" adoption
event location on Coors Bypass NW (hours 10am until 4pm, maybe a
little earlier closing). The others will be at the Ranch, Sunday hours
10am until 4pm (see the Contact Us page for directions). The
Ranch is closed Mon/Tue, open again Wed-Sun 10am-4pm.

We have had such an outpouring of support from the WMR family that
we wanted to update you on the dogs, and their puppies!
As a true Watermelon Mountain Ranch family member, you saw the
need to give and responded generously to our request! Your
donations totaled over $6,000 for this project, and we thank you
from the bottom of our hearts.
Some of the dogs are warming up to the volunteers who sit with
them in their pens, read to them, and talk softly to them. Some
are able to walk on a leash now, and some had puppies.
Yes, we said puppies! We weren't aware that any of the dogs were
pregnant when we rescued them from the hoarder in Taos, so you can
imagine our surprise when fourteen puppies were born to three of
the female dogs in December.
These beautiful Golden Retriever crossbreeds delivered beautiful
puppies who all look just like their mothers. When its time, the
puppies will all be micro chipped, vaccinated, and spray/neutered
and be put up for adoption, probably in February sometime.

Watermelon Mountain Ranch, New Mexico’s largest no-kill animal
shelter has partnered with Animal Planetto rescue 15 dogs
from Jack, an animal hoarder who lives near Taos, NM.
These
beautiful Golden Retriever crossbreeds have lived their lives
under desperate conditions. According to Animal Planet footage,
the dogs lived under Jack’s home and fought over scoops of dry dog
food that was tossed over a fence into their yard.
Our
staff worked with Taos Animal Control to secure seven of the dogs
and bring them back to the ranch on October 15. This week, staff
with Stray Hearts Animal Shelter in Taos will bring five more dogs
surrendered by the hoarder to the ranch. We expect three more
dogs will be delivered to the ranch before the end of the year.
The dogs range in age from 3 to 14-years-old, and all will be
placed in the ranch’s canine rehabilitation program.
These
are beautiful dogs and we feel it is important to do everything we
can to get these Golden Retriever crossbreeds rehabilitated and
adopted. This is a huge undertaking and these dogs need your
help. They are scared and require your compassion and dedication
to ensure they are socialized, well mannered and ready for a home
of their own.
Rehabilitating these dogs will be a costly undertaking. The
average cost to rehabilitate a single dog rescued from an animal
hoarder is about $1,000, and with the ranch running at capacity
some of the dogs currently at the ranch have been placed in a
private boarding facility to make room for the dogs from Taos.
The
rescue Watermelon Mountain Ranch is participating in will air on
Animal Planet's new hit series “Confessions: Animal Hoarding:
Where Are They Now Special," which is a follow up of Animal
Planet’s first cycle of animal hoarding stories. Jack was
featured in episode 4.
The
special will air on Animal Planet in January 2011. The series
explores stories of people who own more pets than they can care
for. The problem of animal hoarding is little understood, but
far more common than most people realize. There are more than
3,000 reported cases a year, and at least ten times that number
that go unreported. The series brings families together to
voluntarily find humane solutions that work for both pets and
people.
Watermelon Mountain Ranch has participated in the rescue of
numerous pets from animal hoarders throughout New Mexico and has
had tremendous success in rehabilitating the pets and finding them
homes, but the current economic climate has stretched the ranch’s
resources and we need your help to ensure the dogs have the high
quality care and training needed to ensure their successful
rehabilitation and adoption.
You
are the key to getting these great dogs rehabilitated. Anything
you donate will be greatly appreciated in the effort to help these
dogs; including money, donations of food and animal supplies, or
the donation of your valuable time. You can
make your donation online.
Please call or email us for available volunteer and foster family
opportunities.
