Kennel Attendant (Hiring for 2 positions)

We are seeking responsible, reliable, and compassionate people to work full-time as kennel staff at our main facility in northern Rio Rancho. This is a 10 acre working ranch and responsibilities take place indoors and outdoors, regardless of weather. 

The right fit for this position will understand that animals in our care are fully dependent on staff — from their meals to their safety, they rely on us. Many of our animals have been let down by humans before, and we have made a commitment to them that will never happen again.

​The position of Kennel Attendant is a very important one and the employee must be prepared to provide the utmost care of WMR animals and ensure their safety and comfort at all times.

Job Duties:

• Must be willing and able to work with large breed canines

• Transporting animals to and from the kennels. (Must be willing and able to lift 50lbs unassisted.)

• Ensuring that the animals have ample, fresh food and water at all times.

• Cleaning animal waste, spilled food, hair, and other debris from the kennels.

• Disposing of trash in a timely manner.

• Accompanying animals on walks, if required.

• Calming animals who are in distress.

• Evacuating all animals if an emergency occurs.

• Assist adopters, donors and public on tours of Ranch and dog kennels when needed


• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Previous experience caring for animals is a plus!

• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

• Excellent interpersonal skills.

• Physically fit and agile.

• A passion for animal welfare.

• Available to work weekends and public holidays, if required.

Animal Caretaker/Adoption Counselor

Full time position open at our Going to the Dogs (and Cats) Resale Shop & Adoption Center inside Cottonwood Mall for a responsible and compassionate animal lover to care for pets in our adoption center. This adoption center primarily focuses on small breed dogs, shy dogs, and senior cats who might not do well in a larger animal shelter setting.


  • Process intake records of animals upon arrival and through adoptions

  • Ensure that all dogs and cats are properly monitored for health, food/water, exercise, etc.

  • Maintain kennels for cleanliness and to meet sanitation requirements.

  • Accompany animals on walks and exercise breaks.

  • Assist adopters, donors, and public with questions about the animals.

  • Assist and work alongside volunteers on both animal adoption side and retail shop.

  • May be asked to help with animal transports to and from adoption events, veterinary appointments, etc.

Retail Shop

  • May assist with the intake and processing of donations, issue receipts and record all information

  • Greet customers and answer questions on merchandise

  • Assist retail manager to maintain a clean and organized store.


This is a full time position, 10am-6pm.

Schedule is negotiable, Saturday and Sundays required.

Volunteer Coordinator (Part time/Remote)

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the management of Watermelon Mountain Ranch’s volunteer programs. Essential duties and responsibilities include recruiting, training, orienting, managing, supporting, tracking, and evaluating all volunteers for Watermelon Mountain Ranch’s programs. These include volunteers at the main Ranch location, two PetSmart adoption centers and two resale shops.

This is a part-time job of 20 hours a week. This is a remote job for the most part. This position is expected to conduct Volunteer Orientations every Saturday at the Ranch, and visit the satellite adoption centers and resale shops periodically.



  • General Volunteer Management

  • Take proactive steps to ensure optimum coverage of volunteers for the organization’s needs.

  • Identify and schedule volunteers to fulfill WMR needs, special projects, and special events.

  • Match volunteers with opportunities that suit their skills and interests and serve the organization. Interview, assess, and assign new volunteers.

  • Manage volunteer training, including Saturday orientations. Ensure that volunteers are given appropriate training to be successful in their positions. Orient volunteers to increase their understanding of WMR, its clients, its services, and the roles and responsibilities of volunteers.

  • Serve as the primary contact for existing and potential volunteers.

  • Motivate, evaluate, and recognize volunteers; foster positive experiences for them to maximize volunteer retention.

  • Research and implement industry best practices for volunteer management.

  • Ensure that volunteers work in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations.

  • Maintain accurate and timely volunteer records; manage a volunteer database; track and report volunteer statistics (monthly).

  • Prepare monthly and annual reports on the contribution of the volunteer program to the organization

  • Maintain effective relationships with community organizations.

  • Prepare monthly email blasts to volunteers to keep them informed about events,

  • programs, and general needs.

  • Work collaboratively with the social media coordinator, Ranch Manager and resale store associates to maximize use of website and social networks for volunteer recruitment and promotion of volunteer activities and events.

  • Manage the WMR Volunteer Group on Facebook and post updates on volunteer needs.


  • Animal welfare experience or prior work with a nonprofit organization a plus.

  • Able to work flexible hours, which includes weekends and some evenings.

  • Valid driver’s license with access to reliable transportation

  • Passion for the WMR mission and commitment to animal welfare issues.

  • Skills and Experience:

  • Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a diverse staff, volunteers, and community in a professional, pleasant, respectful, and courteous manner.

  • Ability to problem solve and work with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to set goals, and work independently to plan and carry out projects.

  • Organizational and time management skills.

  • Experience handling and caring for cats and dogs in a safe, effective, and humane manner a plus.

  • Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

  • Experience with shelter software (PetPoint) a plus.
